Eating Dreamland Bar-b-que 280
Draped in Alabama history and an appetizing smokey aroma, Dreamland Bar-b-q has mastered delicious straightforward backyard style sides with savory bar-b-q meats.
On your way to your seat you walk by the double pit bar-b-que area lit up by a "no farting" sign. You got the message right away that Dreamland is not trying to impress you. They are just being who they are, and that means great no fuss Alabama bar-b-cue.
Instead of chips and salsa or bread and butter, at Dreamland you get white bread and savory vinegar based barbecue sauce. Apparently your supposed to pour the sauce over a slice instead of pulling and dipping as I did at first. Just not enough Bama in me yet.
The tea is sweeter than a Southern Belle at church on a Sunday morning. Gets some lemon to cut through the sugar and balance out the flavors. Either way you'll feel the after effects of this Dixieland Delight surging through your veins shortly after your first sip.
We went ribs and sides family style. The beans taste just like momma makes them. Straight forward and slightly sweet. Mustard potato salad was peppery and smooth. Always prefer mustard over mayo for my potato salad.
The ribs were smokey, chewy and charred like a deluxe pieces of manly beef jerky. The savory sauce was thin and drizzled instead of soaked onto the ribs. I enjoyed the alternative to the normally thick and sweet Alabama barbecue sauce.
Was able to work in a little Mexican with some pork quesadillas. Onions and peppers mixed in with the barbecue meat nicely. I enjoyed the fact that their were not loaded with cheese, which allowed the meat to shine between the crispy tortillas. For bonus points I dipped a bite into the barbecue sauce for the complete marriage of barbecue and Mexican.
Cucumber showed up in my banana pudding king cake style. Wasn't expecting that. I was told in Alabama that means your buying the next meal. Then someone else at the table had a slice of carrot in his, and we figured that meant these banana puddings were on the house. Maybe garden pudding would be a better description for this dessert.
Always wanted to try Dreamland. Any SEC football fan has heard of its legendary ribs anytime a big game in Tuscaloosa is played. Great no-nonsense bar-b-que!
